"Nano-Stage"TM
Nanometer Resolution Linear Stage
PLC 2.0 PLC 2.0
The "Nano-Stage"TM nanometer resolution linear positioning stage from The Motion Group, Inc. is the complete mechanical stage assembly on the market capable of precise linear positioning to 40 nanometers (nm). The "Nano-Stage"TM offers an economical solution to other more costly and highly limited submicron positioning methods such as piezo nanopositioners. Many distinct advantages over these types of positioners include; long travel length – several inches vs. several mm, absolute repeatability (no drift), position maintained when powered off, no dangerous voltage, and ease of set-up and use. Typical applications include biomedical / microbiology, cell handling, micro machining (engraving), optics, fiber alignment, probe stations and microscope stages.

"Nano-Stage"TM uses poly-phase synchronous DC brushless motors to provide precise positional control. Resolution is typically 640,000 increments per inch (39.7 nm) with no microstep spacing error. Fixed lead screw configuration reduces moving parts and rigid construction minimizes positional error due to chassis deformation. The stages are designed to be stackable for multi-axis applications.
PLC 2.0
Each stage features an integrated motor, integrated optical home sensors and over-travel safety limit switches. A thumbwheel is included which enables the operator to return the stage to its operating range in case the limits are exceeded and the motor is disabled. A standard DB-9 connector connects the motor, sensors and switches to the controller.

Intelligent control is provided by The Motion Group’s MMC motion control/driver system. Features include adjustable torque, stall protection, optical Super-Homing, slip detection and over-travel safety limits. Other control features include ramped acceleration/deceleration and general-purpose I/O functions for valves, indicators, switches and sensors. On-board non-volatile program memory allows the stage to be used for stand-alone repetitive tasks. The controller also interfaces with any computer for interactive real-time tasks (when interfaced with popular control/data acquisition software including LabViewTM) or user-interactive tasks under keyboard control. Multiple units can be networked together for coordinated control.

"Nano-Stage"TM is a typical element in The Motion Group's nanoscopic "Build-A-Lab"TM system. Other components available include robotic “Nano-Pump”TM picoliter syringe pumps, robotic peristaltic pumps, tip/pipette micro-actuators, motion controllers and network controllers. Kits and complete systems for custom research lab applications are available. Contact The Motion Group for more information.
