CNC is an acronym for “Computer
Numerical Control” which is the act of
controlling a machine with a computer.
Usually, this refers to various types of
fabrication equipment. As you might
expect, many such systems are designed
using stepper motors.
TMG’s CNC retrofit kits allow computer
control over: mills, mill/drills, lathes, light
machines, routers, glue dispensers,
gasket cutters, sign makers, sharpeners,
etc.
The kits come with 2, 3 or 4 axis of
control (e.g. x, y, z axis and table tilt).
The kits come with CNC software
(Windows based) that includes milling,
drilling and letter engraving routines.
The kits work with Mach 3 software (a popular
CNC software for mills and lathes). You can get it
here.
You’ll have to fabricate motor mounts and you
should have a way to mount limit switches.
The video you see here is the CNC that we use in
the shop. It predates everyone here at The
Motion Group and our best guess is that it was
set up about 15 years ago. It’s still in regular use
today.
We use a three-axis configuration (X, Y and Z).
You can see the motor mount and belt assembly
clearly on the X axis assembly on the right of the
image (above). You can also see a front view of
the setup on the Z axis on the bottom front of the
equipment.
